At Bathed by Nature, LLC, we craft our handmade soaps from fine vegetable oils, essential oils, herbs and other ingredients. We craft in small batches to control quality and aesthetics. In a limited manner, we will introduce fragrances or other additives into our recipes never allowing the contents of our products to fall below 97% natural. One of our goals is to support the natural functions of your skin and body with our products, not detract from it.
Soap making can be difficult. It takes the precision of baking and each ingredient must be precisely measured. Making soap this way is time consuming and requires patience and care. It involves a number of steps and lots of practice. This care and personal attention to the product produces a better bar of soap. The natural ingredients, essential oils and hand processing are more expensive than synthetic ingredients, fragrance oils and mass production. For these reasons, handcrafted soaps are more expensive than commercial soaps. But I believe they are well worth it.
Have you ever wondered why the "soap" you buy at the store doesn't say soap on the label? Because most soap that you by commercially is not really soap at all. Commercial "soap" is usually labeled "beauty bar", "cleansing bar" or "deodorant bar". They contain synthetic detergents filled with artificial fragrances, fillers, boosters, chemicals and preservatives. A detergent is a synthetic imitation of soap, i.e. a laundering agent. Read the label, it's chilling!
The next time you are in the store and pick up a bar of "soap" peek at the label. Does it contain predominantly pure and natural ingredients? Or does the label read like a newfound language! Do your research and know what you are buying. Your skin is a living organ and deserves the same care you give your heart, lungs, hair, teeth, or eyes.
Cold Process Soap
Handcrafted soaps are made by mixing water, oils (or fat) and lye. The resulting saponification process creates a solid composed of soap and glycerin. Soap cleanses the skin and glycerin moisturizes it. Once saponification is complete, there is NO LYE left in the soap. Regardless of what people may have told you, you cannot make soap without lye. If someone tells you otherwise they are probably trying to sell you detergent made from synthetic products!
Glycerin is the natural by-product of soap making that makes Handcrafted soap special. Because of its value, many soap companies remove it from their products and sell it to other manufacturers. So by using handcrafted soap you get clean and moisture in one! Isn't it interesting that the same big companies that produce "soap" also flood the market with lotions? Now, I don't make any claims about our soaps except that they will get you clean and smell fabulous. But I have been told by many of our customers that using handcrafted soap eliminates (or greatly minimizes) the need for lotions. Some even use it on their hair while in the shower.
Melt and Pour Soaps
Melt and pour soaps are handcrafted from a soap base. These bases are acquired from vendors who meet our high quality standards. Once the base is melted we add our unique botanticals, scents, additives and colors.
Curing Time
For our cold process soaps, we require 1-3 weeks of shelf time to cure our product into a firm finished product. For or melt and pour soaps curing takes about 1 hour.
Soap Care
Because your soap bar does not contain any synthetic solidifying agents, it can become mushy if left sitting in water. To ensure long life of your soap bar, rinse the excess lather off of it place your soap in a draining soap dish that allows complete drainage of water from underneath the soap bar; you’ll enjoy your natural soap that much longer!
Soap up a loofah or cloth with your soap instead of scrubbing your body with it to help your natural soap last longer.
